$270 million, that is the number that the New England Patriots have spent in the first three days of free agency. $150 million, that is the number they are going to have to pay in guaranteed money to their new acquisitions. The New England Patriots have been unusually active in free agency this year. Coach Belichick had his first losing season since 2000. With Tom Brady’s departure and all the opt-outs, it was expected for the Patriots to take a step back. Their offense was one of the worst in the NFL and their defense was the only thing keeping them in games. In all honesty, it is impressive they finished 7-9 after watching Cam Newton and that offense. They lacked weapons, explosiveness, and most importantly cohesion. They constantly looked out of sync and it seemed as if Newton and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels never clicked. It is clear in 2021, that will not happen. Bill Belichick went out and got some weapons for Cam Newton. It started with pairing tight ends Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith. Two explosive, athletic tight ends that Cam Newton will be able to hit down the seams. Next, explosive deep threat Nelson Agholor signed as well as Kendrick Bourne who are both in the prime of their careers. Nelson revitalized his career in Las Vegas, catching 48 balls, for 896 yards and 8 touchdowns. If Cam Newton can develop chemistry with his new weapons, this offense with McDaniels at the controls might be dangerous. If the Patriots have an excellent draft class along with starting middle linebacker and team leader Dont’a Hightower returning from COVID opt-out, this Patriot team may be looking to reclaim their AFC East crown.
