Atlanta Won the Fire Sale: Sock’s Cy Young Rankings

4 min read

I hope everybody had a great Memorial Day and enjoyed some good baseball. We have new leaders at the top of my Cy Young rankings, so let’s get right into this special Tuesday edition.

NL Cy Young Rankings

On the Bubble: Dylan Cease, Tyler Glasnow, Sonny Gray, Javier Assad, Jared Jones

5. Jordan Hicks – SFG: Last Week’s Ranking: On the Bubble
A lot of pitchers could have ended up with the number five spot, but I landed on Jordan Hicks for this week. In his last start, he went 5 innings, only allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, and 1 earned run with 8 strikeouts. He now has a 2.33 ERA on the year with 48 strikeouts. His K/9 is only 7.4, but he has been reliable for San Francisco this season.

4. Zack Wheeler – PHI: Last Week’s Ranking: #4
Wheeler had a solid performance against the Rangers this past week. He went seven innings while only allowing two earned runs and striking out five batters. His ERA stayed the same at 2.53, and he will stay the same in my rankings.

3. Chris Sale – ATL: Last Week’s Ranking: #5
Chris Sale is on fire. He only allowed 1 run in his last start while going 7 innings and striking out eight. Sale has a 2.12 ERA, 0.84 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts on the season. I was close to putting him number two, but I’ll hold off for now.

2. Ranger Suarez – PHI: Last Week’s Ranking: #1
Ranger Suarez had two starts in the past week. The first went well. He went 7 innings, struck out 10, and only allowed 1 earned run. The second start could have been better. He went 6 innings, but the damage was done by the end of the 2nd inning. He gave up 4 earned runs, 4 walks, and 5 hits. The bright side is he struck out nine batters and still leads the NL in WHIP with a 0.82. He moves back to number two on my list.

1. Shota Imanaga – CHC: Last Week’s Ranking: #2
Due to a rain delay, Imanaga missed his start this week and plans to pitch on the 29th of May. He’s not qualified, but he will be again soon. He still has a 0.84 ERA, and with Ranger Suarez’s down week, Imanaga has jumped to number one in my rankings.

AL Cy Young

On the Bubble: Logan Gilbert, Joe Ryan, Jon Gray, Tyler Anderson, Brady Singer

5. Reese Olson – DET: Last Week’s Ranking: On the Bubble
Just like the NL, there were a lot of options for the number five spot. I’m going to give it to Reese Olson. He pitched twice this week. In game one, he had to be taken out abruptly after being hit by a pitch. In the second game, he went 6 1/3 innings, allowing 3 hits, 3 walks, and no runs while striking out 4. His ERA on the season is 1.92, and he is beginning to make a name for himself.

4. Luis Gil – NYY: Last Week’s Ranking: #4
Gil followed up his 14-strikeout performance with an 8-strikeout performance against the Mariners this past week. Gil lowered his ERA from 2.39 to 2.11 and WHIP from 1.08 to 1.01. He hasn’t moved up this week but has been fantastic in New York.

3. Tanner Houck – BOS: Last Week’s Ranking: #3
Houck was fantastic this past week in his two starts. In total, he pitched 13 innings, giving up 9 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts while only allowing 1 run. His ERA is now 1.90, and he still lands at number three on my list.

2. Tarik Skubal – DET: Last Week’s Ranking: #1
Skubal had a rough start, costing him the number-one spot on my list. He let up 4 earned runs and 6 hits against the Royals last week, which brought his ERA from 1.80 to 2.25. He still has the lead in WHIP with a 0.85.

1. Seth Lugo – KCR: Last Week’s Ranking: #2
Just like we all thought, Seth Lugo Cy Young. He leads the AL in ERA with a 1.74. Lugo only gave up 1 run in his last outing and leads the AL with 72.1 innings pitched. It’s a tight race, but Lugo is number one on my list.

Looks like the top5-10 will be “flopping” around throughout the season, assuming none of them suffers a year ending injury. Someone will have to come on strong to compete with the existing list of MVP’s and Cy Young winners.
