No Assad Would Make Rankings Flawed: Sock’s MLB Cy Young Rankings

4 min read

The next edition of my Cy Young power rankings is here! Most things have stayed the same, but there will still be some new names. Let’s dive in!

NL Cy Young Rankings

On the Bubble: Jordan Hicks, Jared Jones, Chris Sale, Logan Webb, Freddy Peralta

I will also mention that Shota Imanaga is 1/3 of an inning short of being qualified.

5. Javier Assad – CHCLast Week’s Ranking: Outside the Bubble
Assad wasn’t qualified for last week’s ranking, but now that he is eligible, I must put him in my top five. In 7 starts this season, Assad has a 1.66 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and 31 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. His 1.66 ERA is the best in the NL as of today. He has been a huge bright spot for Chicago.

4. Zack Wheeler – PHI: Last Week’s Ranking: #2
Wheeler’s ERA went from 1.93 to 1.91, but his WHIP increased from 0.88 to 0.92. In his last start, he pitched 5 innings and recorded 6 strikeouts, 1 walk, and 1 earned run. Overall, it wasn’t his best start, and it will cost him a few spots in the rankings this week.

3. Tyler Glasnow – LAD: Last Week’s Ranking: #4
Glasnow gave up 2 earned runs in his last start against Atlanta, but he struck out 10 and only allowed 1 walk in 7 innings. Glasnow still leads the NL in strikeouts and innings pitched. Glasnow has a 2.70 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP and has moved up one spot in my rankings.

2. Dylan Cease – SDP: Last Week’s Ranking: #3
Cease went 6.2 innings, striking out 8 batters and allowing no walks while only giving up 3 hits and 1 earned run in his last start against Arizona. He has a 2.55 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 48 strikeouts through 42.1 innings pitched.

1. Ranger Suarez – PHI: Last Week’s Ranking: #1
Everything has stayed the same at the top of my NL Cy Young rankings. Suarez’s last start could have been better. He went 6 innings, allowing 7 hits, 1 walk, and 3 earned runs. He still leads the NL in WHIP with a 0.72, and his ERA went from 1.32 to 1.72. It was still considered a quality start, and he would still be my 2024 NL Cy Young.

AL Cy Young Rankings

On the Bubble: Jose Berrios, Kutter Crawford, Tyler Anderson, Brady Singer, Corbin Burnes

5. Ronel Blanco – HOU: Last Week’s Ranking: #4
Blanco drops to number 5 on my list after giving up 3 earned runs in his last start against Seattle. His ERA went from 1.65 to 2.09, but his WHIP remains under 1.00, at 0.96. He still has the no-hitter, keeping him at number 5.

4. Seth Lugo – KCR: Last Week’s Ranking: On the Bubble
Lugo has been a fantastic addition to the Royals rotation. He has a 1.60 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP through 7 starts this season. In his last start, he went 7 innings, only allowing 2 hits, 2 walks, and 1 earned run while fanning eight.

3. Tanner Houck – BOS: Last Week’s Ranking: #3
Houck had a rough outing in his last start against the Twins, giving up 6 hits, 2 walks, and 4 runs, 3 of which were earned. He now has a 1.99 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP with 46 strikeouts. I give Houck the edge over Lugo for now because of Houck’s better WHIP and total strikeouts.

2. Tarik Skubal – DET: Last Week’s Ranking: #1
Skubal still has an impressive 1.90 ERA and AL-leading 0.77 WHIP, but those 2 earned runs he gave up against the Yankees are enough to knock him off the #1 spot in a tight AL Cy Young race. I should note that Skubal struck out 12 batters in 6 innings against the Yankees. I still like Skubal, and I’m sure he’ll be in the #1 spot again.

1. Logan Gilbert – SEA: Last Week’s Ranking: #2
Gilbert has been on a tear for Seattle. In his last outing against Houston, Gilbert went 8 innings and only gave up 2 hits and 4 walks. He struck out 6 and didn’t allow a run. Logan Gilbert now has a 1.69 ERA with a 0.79 WHIP and 50 strikeouts. He would be my AL Cy Young today.
